Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an associate professor of family medicine at the University of Ottawa, abused his power by falsely accusing a resident physician, Dr. Yipeng Ge, of anti-Semitism for pro-Palestinian social media posts which call for a ceasefire and an end to the genocide of Palestinians. Freedhoff wrote a blogpost which targeted and intimidated Ge and also called him out on X (formally Twitter). This lead to Ge's unjust suspension due to misuse of authority by the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Medicine. Ge, who was a member of the Canadian Medical Association, ultimately resigned from the CMA board of directors, citing bullying, harassment, and intimidation from certain members within the CMA leadership. The CMA's failure to confront anti-Palestinian racism and its stance of "neutrality" on Israeli apartheid and genocide in Gaza played a pivotal role in Ge's decision. He contends that effective medical leadership should encourage dialogue, bridge divides, and lead with compassion. The CMA failed by staying silent on the continued attacks on healthcare workers in Gaza, undermining humanitarian principles. These issues emerged following Freedhoff's blog post, despite Ge's original intent to address anti-Palestinian and broader racist rhetoric and human rights issues. A petition seeks accountability for Freedhoff's actions and protection for Ge against further harm: https://www.change.org/p/reinstate-dr-yipeng-ge-and-launch-inquiry-into-uottawa-faculty-of-medicine.
