In 1998, Winona Ryder participated in the television special, To Life! America Celebrates Israel's 50th. Palestinian scholar, Edward Said, wrote of the event, "None of these luminaries are particularly known for their Middle Eastern expertise or enthusiasm, although all of them in one way or another praised Israel's greatness and enduring achievements."
