“Thank you for taking the time to contact me with your thoughts regarding the Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel that started the war in Gaza.
October 7, 2023, the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hamas launched a surprise attack against Israel. Hamas fired thousands of missiles and unleashed hundreds of terrorists to storm cities in southern Israel. Hamas intentionally targeted innocent civilians, including children, the elderly, and women in these horrific attacks to inflict the maximum amount of pain and instill fear into the Israeli people. Hamas has kidnapped nearly 200 soldiers and civilians, including young children. Tragically, more than 30 U.S. citizens have been confirmed killed and 600 Americans are believed to still be in Gaza, including 13 who are unaccounted for. In the wake of these deadly terrorist attacks, I immediately expressed my unequivocal support for Israel and its right to defend itself.
I condemn all Hamas sympathizers, and the false and despicable narrative that these attacks were justified in the name of “decolonization.” Hamas is beheading babies, burning children, and raping women. No one should be defending this terrorist group, and all Americans should be united in confronting Iranian-sponsored terrorism and standing with Israel.
Unfortunately, the Biden Administration decided in September to unfreeze Iranian assets in exchange for the return of five wrongfully detained American hostages. Immediately after the exchange, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said that Iran would use the money “wherever we need it,” as the dangerous authoritarian regime is emboldened to continue funding terrorism. To reverse President Biden’s misguided and dangerous decision, I cosponsored a bill led by Rep. August Pfluger (TX-11) to immediately refreeze the $6 billion in Iranian assets. I also joined a resolution led by Rep. Michael McCaul (TX-10) to formally condemn Hamas for its brutal attacks.
Israel is a sovereign nation. A Palestinian nation does not exist today, and did not exist under Ottoman rule or the British Mandate. Upon the 1947 United Nations Partition Plan recommending the establishment of two separate states, Palestinian leadership and every single Arab state rejected the resolution and refused to acknowledge Israel’s right to exist. Arab states in the region rejected Israel’s peace gestures after wars started by the Arab coalition in 1967 and 1973.
No sovereign nation should be asked to trade land for peace. Israel has made such offers in pursuit of peace, but history demonstrates that terrorist groups are never deterred or satisfied by appeasement. Carving up Israeli territory to create a new hostile nation would provide a more dangerous staging ground for future attacks on Israeli citizens.
For many decades, this tension has prevented Arab nations in the region from normalizing their relations with Israel. However, the Trump Administration helped negotiate the Abraham Accords, which established full diplomatic relations between Israel and Bahrain, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Sudan. This historic effort helped further the mutual cause of peace in the Middle East and essential recognition of Israel’s sovereignty. Despite the setback with Hamas’ recent deadly and inhumane attacks, these accords remain intact.
I am proud to stand with Israel, and I believe that their homeland which was reestablished in 1948 was originally given to them by God over 3,000 years ago. I also believe that Israel is one of our few true allies in the world, and I respect the biblical admonition from Genesis 12:3: “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you.”
