During a visit to the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History on Friday, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) said he agreed that it was “the right decision” to disband a pro-Palestinian encampment on the University of Pennsylvania’s campus.
“Protest is a form of expression that we protect constitutionally and it’s a great American tradition to protest,” Casey told a group of reporters. “But at some point, when a protest begins to affect the ability of others to get to class or in this case with an impending graduation, it begins to infringe upon others’ rights.” Casey also told reporters that he disagreed with the recent decision by the Biden administration to pause sending some military aid to Israel.
Asked about Israel’s response and the war’s reported death toll of 30,000 Palestinians, Casey said that “Israel has to do everything in its power pursuant to international law to reduce civilian casualties substantially and the dropping 2000 pound bombs isn’t consistent with that.” He noted that 1,200 people were killed in the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.
