Despite mounting objections from within the American literary community (as well as public condemnation from two prominent novelists who recently cut ties with the organization), on Wednesday evening PEN America’s Los Angeles branch went ahead with its hosting of a conversation between stand-up comedian Moshe Kasher and controversial actor/outspoken ceasefire opponent and Israel supporter Mayim Bialik.
As documented in videos recorded during the event, Palestinian-American writer Randa Jarrar (A Map of Home, Love Is an Ex-Country), along with a number of other members of the group Writers Against the War on Gaza (WAWOG), disrupted the PEN Out Loud event by using a speaker to play the names of the thirteen writers and poets killed by Israel in Gaza since October 7 and vocally questioning why PEN was “inviting a Zionist into this space.” When Jarrar remained seated and refused to stop protesting, security dragged her chair from the event space.
