In late March 2025, Drew Phillips came under public scrutiny following his comments about climate and humanitarian activist Greta Thunberg during episode 185 (timestamp 39:29) of Emergency Intercom. In the episode, Drew and his co-host, Enya Umanzor, joked that Greta had "fallen off," and "fighting where, because we don't see her," suggesting a decline in her relevance. However, many pointed out that Greta’s visibility had been actively suppressed due to her outspoken advocacy for Palestine and her condemnation of the ongoing genocide, not because of any decrease in her activism.
The remarks were widely criticized by fans, who felt the comments were tone-deaf and dismissive, especially given that this was the only mention of the Palestinian genocide by the hosts over the past two years, and it was made as a "joke". Following the episode’s release, fans began commenting under posts by Elisa Sue Young Park (@sheluvsrats97 on TikTok), a former friend who had previously appeared in several videos with Drew and Enya.
One fan commented, "Please educate ur friends," to which Elisa responded:
*"I don’t think it’s fair to put the responsibility on me to educate people that I haven’t even associated with for years… and to assume that I hadn’t already tried to do so." *
When another fan asked,* "how u feel abt the recent Emergency Intercom episode,"* Elisa simply replied:
"Free Palestine."
This interaction led to widespread speculation that a falling-out between Elisa and the podcast hosts may have been due to Drew and Enya's ongoing silence regarding Palestine on their large platforms.
The controversy also caught the attention of Nicole Rafiee, known for her "Chronically Online Girl Explains..." YouTube series. In episode 36 (timestamp 46:30) of her podcast Talk Nasty to Me, Nicole expressed her disappointment with Drew and Enya. She revealed that both had been invited to join the "Creators for Palestine" campaign, an initiative aiming to raise $1 million for organizations like PCRF, MAP, UNRWA, and HEAL Palestine—but they declined to participate.
In response to the backlash, the Emergency Intercom Instagram page issued a public apology regarding their comments about Greta. However, the apology was not mentioned in the following podcast episode nor shared on their personal Instagram accounts, which have significantly larger audiences. Furthermore, the apology did not refer to any steps they intended to take to educate themselves or support the cause. Many criticized the apology as shallow, especially given that they had previously been offered resources and opportunities to engage with the issue but chose not to.
As of now, Drew Phillips has yet to publicly acknowledge the Palestinian genocide or show support for the cause in any form.
Silence = Complicity:
For those who have passionately spoken out against other instances of genocide and massacres, yet fall silent when it comes to the suffering endured by Palestinians, their silence becomes a glaring indictment of the value placed on Palestinian lives and perpetuates a dangerous narrative that suggests Palestinian suffering is somehow less worthy of outrage, less deserving of empathy and less human than that of others.
By choosing silence in the face of Palestinian suffering, those with influential platforms inadvertently contribute to the erasure of Palestinian voices and experiences. They perpetuate a narrative of invisibility that allows the injustices inflicted upon Palestinians to continue unabated, shielded from the spotlight of global scrutiny.
Their silence sends a chilling message of complicity to the world – one that suggests Palestinian lives are expendable, their struggles inconsequential and their humanity negotiable. It emboldens perpetrators of violence and oppression, granting them impunity under the guise of indifference.
To remain silent in the face of Palestinian suffering is to betray the very essence of activism – the relentless pursuit of justice for all, without exception or equivocation. It’s a betrayal not only of the Palestinian people but of the universal principles of human dignity and equality and instead is a tacit endorsement of the dehumanization and marginalization of an entire population.
True activism demands consistency and integrity, an unwavering commitment to speaking truth to power and standing in solidarity with the marginalized and oppressed, regardless of geography or politics.
